Highlighted by Garrett Siever’s sweep of bantam boys’ races, the Telemark Cross Country Nordic Club once again made an impressive showing at a BC Cup event in Kamloops on the weekend.

Siever, following up on two victories at the BC Cup No. 1 earlier in the new year, skied to first place overall among 16 competitors in the individual start classic race on Saturday at Stake Lake and added gold in Sunday’s mass start free at B.C. Cup No. 2.

The 12-year-old opened the weekend by dominating the field in the 2.5-kilometre classic race, finishing nearly 22 seconds ahead of second-place Kaden Kwiatkowski of Kamloops. On Sunday, the 2.5 km freestyle event was much closer as Siever edged out Kwiatkowski by just two seconds.

Telemark teammate, Nikhil Filatow, placed fourth among the 2004 skiers in the bantam classic race on Saturday, while placing sixth in the freestyle. Justin Siever of Telemark earned bronze among the 2005-born racers in both the classic and freestyle events. Jonah Hawes was eighth in the classic and moved up to fourth in Sunday’s free.

The juvenile boys’ events saw Ben Shipley of Telemark take first place among 20 racers in Sunday’s 7 km freestyle after placing second in Saturday’s classic. Matt Shipley recorded a pair of seventh-place finishes among the 2000s.

Gregor Graham of Telemark placed second among midget classic-event skiers born in 2003 and was fourth in the 3.5 km freestyle on Sunday. Teammate Connor Hobbs raced to fifth place among 2002 skiers on Saturday and finished sixth among 16 in the freestyle.

Another gold-medal performance by a Telemark skier was turned in by Jasmine Filatow in the peewee girls 1.5 km mass start freestyle event on Sunday. She finished three seconds ahead of runner-up Makayla Cadden of Larch Hills. On Saturday, the 2006-born skier finished second overall among 22 peewee skiers in the freestyle event.

Eliza-Jane Kitchen took top spot in the junior women’s 10 km classic on Saturday and finished second in Sunday’s freestyle, while Madelaine Ertel skied to third place in both the junior girls 7 km classic and freestyle races.

Michelle Kraetzer raced to fifth among 19 skiers in both the juvenile girls 5 km classic and Sunday’s freestyle.

The junior men’s 15 km freestyle title went to Telemark’s David Walker.

Andrea Kraetzer of Telemark took fourth place on Sunday in the bantam girls 2.5 km freestyle after placing eighth in the classic on Saturday.

Most of the 32 Telemark skiers will also compete at the BC Cup championships in Whistler March 4-6.
