Immaculata, Elliot earn provincial high school golf berths

Led by Grade 8 student Matthew Hopley — playing on his home course — the Immaculata Mustangs once again defended their Okanagan Valley senior A golf championship at Gallagher’s Canyon Golf and Country Club on Monday.

Hopley, who shot a par 72 a week earlier in the Mustangs’ Central Okanagan zone title win at Gallagher’s, fired a tournament-best 3-over 75 in the Valley tournament as Immaculata posted a four-player score of 316 to claim the Okanagan crown for what is believed to be the 15th straight year.

Nik Federko (Grade 11) contributed a 78 to the Mustangs’ total that earned Immaculata a berth in the B.C. School Sports 1A provincial championship tournament at the Christina Lake Golf Club June 5-7. Chris Matte (Grade 12) shot 79 to go along with an 84 by Grade 11 Ethan Hunt. Andrew Gorges rounds out the Immaculata team.

Second-place finishers last year at the BCSS championship at Black Mountain Golf Club, the Mustangs have won the 1A provincial title four of the past six years.

Meanwhile, the George Elliot Coyotes will also represent the Okanagan at a provincial high school championship after winning the Valley’s 2A title at Fairview Mountain Golf Club in Oliver on Monday with a four-man  325 total. The Valleyview Vikes finished second at 331, whlle the Kalamalka Lakers garnered the third Okanagan berth at provincials with a 347 total.

As he has all season, George Wilkins set the pace for the Lake Country team, shooting a 75 while teammate Logan Libke contributed an 80. Brandon Frechette carded an 82 and Cole Wilson, 88. Jesse Stoesz will join the team at the provincial 2A championship being played at the Capilano GCC June 6-8.

In Okanagan Valley senior AAA play on Monday at Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club in Vernon, the Central Zone was denied a berth at the provincial championship tournament being played in Abbotsford June 6-8.

The Penticton Lakers and Vernon Panthers nailed down the two Okanagan berths at provincials with team scores of 306 and 318. The Kelowna Owls and Mt. Boucherie Bears finished third and fourth respectively.

Rhiannon Jones of Boucherie won the girls' long-drive competition.

KELOWNA SWEEP ON JUNIOR TOUR

A first-place finish on Sunday at the Talking Rock Golf Resort in Chase vaulted Kelowna’s Daniel Polischuk into top spot in the Zone 2 (Thompson-Okanagan) Junior Tour order of merit.

The Harvest Golf Club representative shot a 75 and collected 35 points for the victory, giving him 274 points after 12 tournaments this season.

Terry Cousineau of Kamloops, who didn’t play on the weekend, dropped to second place overall with 263.5 points.

In third place overall (245) is Kelowna’s Nik Federko, who finished third at Talking Rock with a 78 and third in Saturday’s tournament at the Salmon Arm Golf Club by shooting a 77.

George Wilkins of Lake Country and Predator Ridge, remains in fourth place overall with 180 points after a second place finish (76) at Talking Rock on Sunday.

Saturday’s tournament in Salmon Arm saw bantam-aged (14-and-under) Matthew Hopley of Gallagher’s Canyon lead the field by shooting a 75.

Second place went to Marcus Apchin of Kelowna while McKenna Lesiuk of Kelowna finished in a tie for fourth place by carding a 78.

The 2016 Zone 2 Junior Tour championship will be decided June 4 and 5 at Gallagher’s Canyon Golf and Country Club.
