A dozen athletes from the Taneda Karate Dojos fought and finessed their way to 14 medals at the B.C. Karate provincial championships at the Richmond Oval on the weekend.
Zach Stevens of Kelowna led the way with a gold medal for his efforts in kumite (sparring) in the elite division of the boys 14-15-year-old age category.
Dojo-mates Jacob Vodarek and Destin Giang met each other in the kumite final of the boys 12-13 intermediate division. Vodarek claimed the gold and Giang the silver while Vodarek also earned a silver in the kata (forms) competition.
Timur McNern of the Taneda Dojo took the gold medal in the 10-11-year-old kumite green-belt event, while Caleb Enns garnered two silver medals — in 16-17-year-old kata and elite kumite.
Also bringing home two gold medals was Michaela Giang, who was competing in her first provincial tournament. She claimed the silver in the women’s plus-35 age category for white and brown belt kumite. Giang added a bronze in kata.
Amelia Brooker, competing in the 14-15-year-old intermediate division, came home with a silver medal in kumite and a bronze for her efforts in kata.
A silver medal went to Avneet Kaloty in the women’s elite kumite event while Isaac Cowan took silver in the 14-15 boys intermediate kumite competition.
Rounding out the medal haul were Simarjit Kaloty (bronze in the 12-13 intermediate girls kumite) and Adam Doucette (14-15 blue/black belt kata).
