The Armstrong Shamrocks took advantage of numerous powerplay opportunities late in the game to defeat the visiting Kelowna Raiders 9-6 in the best-of-three Thompson  Okanagan Senior Lacrosse League final series opener on Wednesday.

Leading 3-1 early on, the Raiders gave up six goals before the end of the first period. Although they came back to tie the host Shamrocks, they couldn’t overcome their penalty woes despite the solid goaltending of Graham Cousins.

Nick Evans led the Raiders in a losing cause, scoring three times to complement a stellar two-way performance at the Nor-Val Arena in Armstrong. Joe Brown, Jared MacLennan and Matt Gorges added singles for the Raiders, who were coming off a semifinal series victory over the Kamloops Rattlers.

Nolan Frame led the regular-season first-place Shamrocks with three goals. Adding singles were Carston Schlaak, Braydon Sanders, Jamie Cockerill, Steve Clark, Cress Bissay and Joe Castle.

The TOSLL Rowcliffe Cup series resumes on Friday at the Kelowna Memorial Arena beginning at 7:30 p.m.
