In a tune-up for the B.C./Yukon sectional championships being held on home ice, Kelowna Skating Club members earned 13 medals at the annual Super Series Autumn Leaves event on the weekend in Kamloops.
A weekend highlight for the 30 KSC members occurred in the Junior Women’s division, as Mckenna Colthorp finished with a personal-best total score of 151.13 points in capturing the gold medal. Her free program score of 102.49 represents the first time in the program that a skater has surpassed the 100-point plateau.
Olivia Gran also skated to a personal-best score of 92.15 in the free program en route to the silver medal.
In the highly competitive Novice level, Kelowna’s Emma Bulawka and Ashley Sales finished second and third respectively in a field of 24 competitors.
Meanwhile, at the Pre-Novice level, 12 year-old Daria Carr skated two dominant programs to win group 1. Her personal-best score of 103.45 was nearly 13 points higher than the second place finisher.
Her clubmate, Maya Rose, won the silver medal in Group 2.
The Kelowna contingent also showed strength at the Juvenile under 12 division, as Emily Sales and Brooklyn Cowen finished one-two in Group 2, while Malayna Lesko finished second in Group 1.
Depth was also evident at the developmental levels, as both Gabrielle Jugnauth and Megan Yudin struck gold in their respective groups of Star 4 under-10 girls.
Rounding out the medal wins were Taiya Knight and Paige Edgar, as each won bronze medals in their Pre-Juvenile women’s competition.
The Kelowna Skating Club will play host to the B.C./Yukon sectional championships at the Capital News Centre Nov. 10-13.
Immaculata earns berth in provincial tournament
The Immaculata Mustangs edged the Similkameen Sparks 1-0 in the Okanagan Valley senior A boys soccer final in Kamloops, earning the four-time champions a berth at the B.C. School Sports provincial tournament next month.
Winners of the Valley pennant in 2014, 2012 and 2010, the Mustangs will be vying for their first provincial title when they represent the Okanagan at the BCSS championship tournament in Surrey Nov. 7-9.
A goal by Lucas Hicklin — on a perfect pass from Nate Portz — was all Immaculata needed in the evenly matched title game that featured a familiar outstanding defensive effort. The Mustangs didn’t allow a goal in their three Valley tournament matches.
Immaculata opened the eight-team event with a 7-0 victory over Vernon Christian School in which Portz scored four times. Gabe Uhrich, Nick Macdonnell and Hicklin added single tallies.
Portz and Hicklin contributed a pair of goals each in a 5-0 win over the St. Ann’s Crusaders of Kamloops in their second game. Reid Herron rounded out the scoring.
Second volleyball tourney win for KSS Owls
The Kelowna Owls lived up to their No. 1 provincial AAA boys volleyball ranking with tournament win in Langley on the weekend.
A 3-0 win over No. 2 Vancouver Tech Talismen in the championship match earned the Owls top spot in the Gator Classic that featured eight of the top 10-ranked teams in the AAA division.
The Kelowna Secondary School representatives earned a berth in the final by defeating the No. 3 Delta Pacers in semi-final play while they had downed No. 5 Dover Bay Dolphins of Nanaimo in a quarter-final match.
Winners of two invitational tournaments this season, the Owls will resume tournament play Nov. 4-5 at the annual George Elliot Coyote Classic in Lake Country.
