The Kelowna Owls will play for gold on Saturday at the Big Kahuna B.C. senior AAA boys volleyball championship.
Aiming to garner their first provincial title in 63 years, the No. 1-seed Owls took another huge step toward the goal by defeating the Dover Bay Dolphins (No. 5) of Nanaimo 3-1 in a semifinal match at the Langley Event Centre on Friday.
They’ll meet the Semiahmoo Totems of Surrey in the gold-medal match on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. The Totems, ranked No. 3 going into the provincials, downed No. 8 Seaquam of Delta in the other semifinal.
The Kelowna Secondary School representatives, had to come from behind to earn the right to play in the provincial final for the fourth time in five years. They dropped the first set 22-25 to the Dolphins, but took over the momentum in the second with a 25-21 victory and followed up with 25-16 and 25-22 wins.
It was the sixth straight win for the Owls in the 20-team tournament.
In provincial AA boys action in Langley, the George Elliot Coyotes will play for seventh place among the 16 teams when they take on the McRoberts Hugh McRoberts Strikers of Richmond on Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m.
The Coyotes, ranked fifth prior to the B.C. championship, came out on the short end of a 2-1 (25-27, 27-25,12-15) decision to the No. 7 Duchess Park Condors of Prince George on the consolation side of draw on Friday.
OKM Huskies aiming to move up at AAA girls tourney
The host Okanagan Mission Huskies have an opportunity to move two spots higher than they were ranked going into the B.C. School Sports senior AAA girls volleyball championship.

A 2-0 win over the Langley Saints on Friday on home court earned the No 11-ranked Huskies a berth in the consolation semifinal on Saturday against the No. 8 Duchess Park Condors of Prince George beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Okanagan Mission Secondary School. The winner will play for ninth place overall among the 16 teams at the provincial tournament. That match is set for 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the top-seeded Brooks Thunderbirds of Powell River have lived up to their billing thus far and will play No. 5 W.L. Seaton Sonics of Vernon in one semifinal on Saturday at 10:45 a.m. at OKM. The other semi sees No. 3-seed Little Flower Academy Angels of Vancouver taking on the Timberline Wolves (No. 2) of Campbell River, also at 10:45 a.m.
The winners will meet in the championship match at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday at OKM, while the bronze-medal match goes at 3:15 p.m.
KCS and Immaculata to meet in provincial semifinal
Either the Kelowna Christian School Knights or the Immaculata Mustangs will play for B.C. School Sports provincial senior A girls volleyball gold on Saturday at Immaculata Regional High School.
But first, the two Central Okanagan teams will have to play each other in a semifinal match beginning at 11:45 a.m. at KCS. The winner will meet either the White Rock Warriors or the Aberdeen Hall Gryphons of Kelowna in the championship match starting at 6:30 p.m. at Immaculata.
The KCS Knights, ranked No. 1 going into the 16-team provincial tournament co-hosted by KCS and IRHS, earned a berth in the semis on Friday by defeating No. 8-ranked Mt. Sentinel Wildcats of South Slocan. Immaculata, seeded third prior to the provincials, swept by No. 12 Cedars Christian Eagles of Prince George in their quarter-final match for the right to play in the semis.
The Mustangs upset Kelowna Christian 2-1 in a power-pool match on Thursday for their first victory of the season over their cross-the-road (KLO) rivals.
Meanwhile, No. 2-seed White Rock, who defeated both KCS and Immaculata on Thursday in pool play, remained unbeaten at the provincial event by downing the Duncan Christian Eagles in their quarter-final matchup on Friday. No. 4-seed Aberdeen Hall of Kelowna, also defeated by White Rock on Thursday to earn a rematch with the Warriors with a victory over the Fernie Falcons in quarter-final play.
