Huskies, Mustangs lose in senior semifinals

Both Kelowna teams came up short in their bid for an Okanagan Valley senior AA girls basketball pennant on Friday at Okanagan Mission Secondary School.

Ranked fourth in the province, the provincially No. 4-ranked OKM Huskies fell to the No. 6 South Kamloops Titans 54-51 in one semifinal on Friday while the No. 5 Immaculata Mustangs dropped an 80-74 decision to the third-ranked Vernon Panthers.

SouthKam and Vernon, assured of representing the Okanagan at the 45th annual provincial AA championship tournament in Langley March 1-4 will meet for the Valley title beginning at 8:15 p.m. today at OKM while OKM and Immaculata will play for third place and another  provincial berth starting at 6:30 p.m. The fourth- and fifth-place finishers will earn a wild-card bid to also represent the Valley at provincials.

OKM defeated the Westsyde Whundas of Kamloops 67-22 today for the right to play in the bronze-medal game while Immaculata downed the Clarence Fulton Maroons of Vernon 82-50 to advance against the Huskies.

Trailing by 13 points at one point in the first quarter of their game against South Kamloops, the Huskies battled back to get to within one in the third quarter, but couldn’t get any closer.

Grade 12s, Marin Felt and Hannah Walline managed 11 points apiece for OKM in the defensive battle that saw Kiara Gaspari contribute eight points in a losing cause. The Huskies were scheduled to play the Westsyde Whundas of Kamloops today for the right to play in the bronze-medal game.

Immaculata hung in against Vernon until early in the second quarter when the Panthers went on an 18-0 run. And while the Mustangs clawed back to within three (60-57) in the third quarter, Vernon’s depth proved the difference down the stretch.

As usual, Immaculata was led by Ashlyn Day (30 points) and Kate Johnson (24 points), but managed to get only 11 points from the rest of the roster. Vernon was led by Megan Rouault and her 24 points while Brianna Falk chipped with 20 points to go along with 18 by Kelsey Falk and 12 by former Immaculata Mustang, Mackenzie Horst.
