Owls prevail over Bears in Okanagan Valley soccer season opener

In a rematch of last year’s semifinal game, the Kelowna Owls opened the 2017 Okanagan Valley senior AAA girls soccer season with a 1-0 victory over the Mt. Boucherie Bears on Tuesday.

Taisa Chuhaniuk’s goal, assisted by Danica Lee 21 minutes into the match at Kelowna Secondary School, stood up as the winner.

Faith Tazelaar earned the shutout for the Owls, who fell 2-1 to the Bears in the 2016 semi. Boucherie went on to lose to South Kamloops in last year’s Valley championship.

This season, SouthKam will play in the AA division, while KSS and Boucherie will be joined by the Rutland Voodoos, Penticton Lakers and the Salmon Arm Jewels in the AAA league.

Next up for the Owls is a game against Salmon Arm on Monday at KSS while Boucherie will play in Penticton against the Lakers. The Voodoos will play host to Salmon Arm on Wednesday at Rutland Sportsfields. All games begin at 4 p.m.
