The UBCO campus sprang to life this weekend, and not with students who were finishing exams, but with cheerleaders.

That’s right, over 800 athletes and their families congregated at the university’s gym for the 5th annual Okanagan Cheerleading Championships and it was a day filled with impressive performances by all.

Teams from all over the province and even Alberta banded together to finish off their competitive season with one final hurrah but, not with the typical pom poms you’d expect from a cheer team.

These athletes have been training hard and put it all on the line in front of a panel of judges, showing off their skills in tumbling, jumping, lifts, dance and stunting.

Athletes came in all age groups and skill sets, some as young as three years old, while others are seasoned veterans of the sport and brought more than just an infectious energy but skills that will hopefully soon be showcased at the Olympics.

Fraser Valley, Vancouver, Medicine Hat, Vancouver Island, Athabasca and of course, Kelowna are some of the cities these athletes came to represent.

And represent they did, with two and a half minute routines these competitors showed that they are more than just high kicks and catchy cheers, but highly skilled and talented athletes.
