Controversial sports team names have been a topic of debate for a number of years now.

The Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Blackhawks and Cleveland Indians are all major sports franchises that have been pressured to change their name.

One franchise that flies a little more under the radar is the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos, but that doesn’t mean everyone is okay with the name.

A recent survey from Insights West shows that one in every five (21%) Canadians think that the Eskimos nickname is unacceptable.

On the other hand, 57% of Canadians think the name is just fine, leaving 23% that are on the fence regarding the issue.

Earlier in November, Edmonton mayor Don Iveson urged the CFL franchise to consider a name change.

If it does happen, it won’t be a popular move in Alberta as only 12% of the province deems the name unacceptable.

The survey found that 27% of Canadians believe the Redskins nickname is unacceptable, while 21% and 19% found issues with the Chiefs and Blackhawks nicknames.
