The BC Lions are back on the field as training camp got underway in Kamloops this weekend.

The camp marks the beginning of the Lions' 70th season as they set their sights on winning a Grey Cup for the first time since 2011.

Rookies arrived at Hillside Stadium for a three-day mini cap last week before the veterans arrived on the weekend for the main camp.

Among the rookies who attended the mini-camp was Kamloops’ very own Colton Meikel, who also received an invite to the main camp as a free agent.

“The amenities and hospitality given to our club in Kamloops are the best we can ask for,” said Lions’ co-general manager Neil McEvoy in a statement from the team.

“The football team is thrilled to be kicking off a 14th straight season in Canada’s tournament capital.”

Team members will be in Kamloops for parts of the next two weeks.

Among all the practices, FanFest is returning this year in the form of a block party in downtown Kamloops on Saturday.

The festivities will include live music, food and beverages, and family activities while collecting donations for the Kamloops Foodbank.

“FanFest is a highly-anticipated event on our calendar for both members of our organization and our outstanding fans themselves,” said Lions’ president Duane Vienneau.

“We are excited to expand the tradition this season and beyond, giving our great fans the opportunity to also enjoy some activities in beautiful downtown Kamloops.”

The Lions will play two preseason games this year. One on the road against the Calgary Stampeders on May 2, and one at home against the Edmonton Elks on May 31.
