The first three innings determined the outcome of all four weekend games but in only one of them did the West Kelowna Dbacks come away with a win in B.C. Baseball’s College Prep (18U) League play at the Lower Mainland.
Falling to 9-19 with the three losses, the Dbacks earned their lone win in the second game of the doubleheader against the host Richmond City Chuckers (8-17) on Saturday by scoring three runs in the first inning, adding one in the second and two more in the third on the way to a 7-1 victory.
A 14-hit outburst led to the lopsided win, with Quinn Rasmussen contributing three hits, two runs and two runs-batted-in. Reegan Forsyth added three hits while Seth Kennedy and Matt Olsen added a pair of singles each.
Defensively, starter AJ Reiter was superb on the hill, limiting Richmond to two hits and striking out four while issuing just one walk.
Earlier in the day, Richmond scored all of their runs in the first two innings en route to a 5-0 win in which the Dbacks could muster just one hit — by Jarod Leroux — who was the losing pitcher despite shutting out the Chuckers in the final four innings and striking out six batters.
In their first game on Sunday in Chilliwack, the Dbacks gave up eight runs in the opening three frames and went on to drop a 10-0 decision to the first-place Cougars (23-3).
The West Kelowna reps did manage six hits — two of them by Leroux — but that wasn’t nearly enough. Keaton Meier, Monty Tebbett, Zane Webber and Forsyth added singles in a losing cause.
The Dbacks outhit the Cougars 6-5 in the second game in Chilliwack but still fell 4-2, allowing their hosts all the runs they would need (three) in the opening two innings.
Aiden Samuel had a solid outing on the mound, allowing just four hits over five innings of work while Tebbett held Chilliwack scoreless in his one inning of relief.
The Dbacks return to the Lower Mainland this weekend, playing the Cloverdale Nationals twice on Saturday and meeting the Tri City Thunder for a twinbill on Sunday.
Next home games for West Kelowna (Boucherie Park) are schedued for July 7 against Chilliwack beginning at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
