Ranked fourth among Okanagan Valley junior girls teams going into the past weekend, the Kelowna Owls overcame the odds to earn a berth at the B.C. provincial championship tournament with a pair of wins in Penticton.

The Owls, led by the high-scoring duo of Katrina Fink and Japleen Chahal, defeated the provincially No. 2-ranked Valleyview Vikes of Kamloops (51-44) and the host No. 11 Penticton Lakers (56-38) in a provincial qualifying tournament at Penticton Secondary School.

Fink scored 17 points and Chahal added 16 as the Owls clinched their provincial berth with the win in the tournament final while Fink opened the tournament with a 20-point performance against Valleyview, complemented by Chahal’s 13 points.

Other members of the Kelowna Secondary School team, coached by Jeff Begg and Sean Davis, are Kristina Hardy, Riley Adams, Kelsey Hanson, Ally Wynn, Sydney Obst, Morgan Begg, Sophie Lachapelle, Nadia Jones and Olivia Koch.

With the tournament victory, the Owls, an honourable mention in the previous provincial rankings, moved up to No. 3 behind Brookswood of Langley and Claremont of Victoria.

The B.C. junior girls championship tournament is scheduled for Feb. 28 to March 3 at the Langley Events Centre.

Prior to that, the Owls will tune up at the annual Immaculata Sweet 16 Tournament Jan. 25-27 and the Valley junior championship tournament in February.
