To say Leon Draisaitl had an incredible season would be an understatement and today the former Kelowna Rockets forward was honoured for his impressive play.
The 24-year-old was named the 2020 winner of the Hart Memorial Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award today, which are the NHL’s most valuable player awards.
Members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association vote for the Hart, while other NHL players vote for the Ted Lindsay.
“It’s a huge honour to me, all I can say is a huge thank you to my family, friends, obviously the Edmonton Oilers, the fans...without those people, this would never happen,” Draisaitl said after winning the award.
Draisaitl scored 43 goals and added 67 assists for 110 points in just 71 games this season, which earned him the Art Ross Trophy.
He led the NHL in scoring by 13 points, with the next closest player being his teammate Connor McDavid.
McDavid is also one of three other Oilers with their name on the Hart Trophy, as Draisaitl joins him, Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky as Oilers who have won the award.
He’s also the first German-born player to win either of the league’s MVP awards.
