BC teachers have voted yes to the tentative agreement meaning the strike and lockout in the province is over.
There were 31,741 ballots cast over the ratification vote with 86 per cent voting in favour. BC Teachers’ Federation President Jim Iker made the announcement at 9:30 p.m. Thursday night. He confirmed that students will be back in school on Monday morning around the province.
Iker said “the deal isn’t perfect, but it provides some gains for teachers and protects out charter rights and it increases support for students.”
According to Iker the vote on Thursday had the largest turnout seen in the last four ratification votes. Approximately 77 per cent of teachers voted around the province.
"I'm happy with this deal, we recommended it, our executive committee recommended it, and now teachers have spoken," added Iker.
The current school calendar will continue as planned and it is not clear how missed time will be made up as students have missed three weeks of classes.
