Hard to believe it’s September already and the kids are back to school in just a couple of days!
After a long stretch of smoke in the middle of August, the cooler weather pattern lately has been a welcome change for many because of the cleaner air and better visibility.
The month of August is typically Kelowna’s second hottest month, behind July. The average daytime high for Kelowna is 27.6 C based on data from all months of August between 1981 to 2010. The average daytime high recorded in August this year was 28.1 C, just half a degree above the climate average.
The average overnight low, however, was a couple of degrees warmer this month compared to the climate average. August 2018 saw an average daytime low of 13.1 C, compared to the overnight low seasonal average of 10.6 C.
The hottest day of this past month hit 37.0 C on Thursday, August 9, 2018, about 2 C under the extreme maximum ever recorded in Kelowna on August 4, 1998 when it hit 39.3 C.
August 2018 was also very dry compared to other years. From 1981 to 2010, the average July precipitation recorded for the Kelowna area was 32.1 mm. However, in August 2018, the Kelowna weather station at UBCO received only 10.7 mm of rain in just 6 days out of the 31 days in the month.
