The month of December is typically the coolest month of the year in Kelowna, with an average high of 0.7C and an average low of -5.9C, according to the Canadian climate normals 1981-2010 data.

The last month of 2019 was slightly warmer than seasonal, but it also received a lot more rain and snow compared to the climate average.

December 2019 had an average daytime high of 1.5C, and an average overnight low of -2.1C, based on data from the weather station at UBCO.

As for precipitation, the Kelowna airport weather station recorded 48.8 mm of total rainfall and water equivalent of snowfall last month, significantly higher than the seasonal amount of 32.6mm for the month of December. Last month's precipitation total is missing data from December 1, 2019.

Although the first day of the new year has been dry to start, the first week of January will see more rain and snow in the forecast when a northwesterly flow brings the risk of rain or snow Wednesday night.

An even greater probability of rain or snow is on deck Thursday evening when the next organized weather system moves inland.
