Oh it’s pretty cold up here in Canada right now, eh?

Canadian cliches aside, the deep freeze blanketing Canada right now continues to be record breaking, which is no small feat for February in Saskatoon.

According to Environment Canada’s senior climatologist David Phillips, Saskatoon shattered a 112-year-old cold mark for Feb. 6, when the temperature plummeted to -42.5 C on Wednesday.

The shocking temperature is far from the city’s seasonal temp of -17C.

“I’m impressed,” said Phillips. “We’re talking about more than 25 degrees colder than it should have been.”

While Saskatoon was cold, it could have been worse.

The coldest place in Canada on Thursday morning was northern the Saskatchewan community of Key Lake, where residents battled a bone-chilling temp of -45.7C.

There may be some slight relief for the Prairies on the horizon, Environment Canada is forecasting highs around -15C for Regina Next week.

“That 10 degrees might feel like a tropical heat wave.”
