Students are back to school this week in Toronto, but most would rather be headed to the beach.

A sweltering heat wave is scorching the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) to begin September and long standing weather records are falling in its wake.

The mercury touched 33.9 C at Pearson airport Wednesday afternoon, feeling more like 42 with the humidity.

That number broke a 73-year-old heat record set previously on Sept. 5 in 1945, when the temperature reached 31.7 C.

Many in the region who were preparing for fall took to social media to express their displeasure with the simply sweltering heat wave.
